Did you know the difference in contractions when on Pitocin vs. off is actually crazy?
A normal contraction builds like a wave, peaks, and then wanes. Like a triangle.
A contraction on Pitocin is like a punch in the face: it starts and immediately shoots up to peaking before stopping. Like a rectangle.
Pitocin is oxytocin administered to induce labor by kickstarting those contractions. The downfall? Labor becomes highly uncomfortable and sometimes even unmanageable.
In a natural contraction, you can breathe through the build, the peak is shorter, and the waning is like a breath of fresh air.
With a Pitocin contraction you go from zero to "Get this out of me!" before you know it.
With everything, as a Doula, I believe in informed choice. You need to know what the risks of "routine" care are. With Pitocin you run the risk of putting stress on the baby* because your body doesn't get a real rest in between contractions! Interventions are more likely in this scenario.
Your labor is yours. Choose what is best for you! I support that. What is most important to me is that you are informed.
Your Doula,
Ally
